What is BaZi? Four Pillars, Ten Gods and birth charts
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars, is a traditional Chinese system that represents a birth year, month, day and hour as four stem–branch pairs. Its eight characters are interpreted through the Day Master, Ten Gods, chart structure and timing cycles, rather than the zodiac animal alone.
What are the Four Pillars and Day Master?
Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The stem of the day pillar is the Day Master, the reference point used to describe relationships with the other stems.
For example, 戊戌 is one stem–branch pair. If it is the day pillar, 戊, Yang Earth, is the Day Master. This is a notation example, not a person's full chart; one pillar cannot establish a complete reading.
What do the Ten Gods mean?
The Ten Gods classify relationships to the Day Master using the five elements and yin–yang polarity. They are Peer, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource and Direct Resource. English translations vary between schools.
Names alone do not determine whether a relationship is helpful. Seven Killings can describe pressure or competition in a traditional reading, but its role depends on the chart's combination. Direct Wealth does not mean someone is guaranteed to earn money on a particular day.
Does BaZi use lunar-calendar months?
In TwinSky's Four Pillars calculation, the year changes at the Start of Spring solar term, and months change at the relevant jie solar-term boundaries. These do not follow the first day of every lunar or Gregorian month. Births near a boundary require its actual time.
Check the date, local clock time and birth city before creating a profile. A lunar-calendar record needs an accurate conversion, including its leap-month status; do not enter lunar month and day numbers as a Gregorian date.
Why might two BaZi calculators disagree?
Longitude correction, historical time zones, daylight saving, the day boundary during Zi hour and the equation of time can affect a chart near a boundary.
TwinSky currently uses longitude-corrected birth time without adding the equation of time. Births from 23:00 to midnight retain the same day's day pillar. Align these choices before comparing tools. Schools can also differ in their definitions of chart structure and useful elements.
How does TwinSky use BaZi?
TwinSky calculates the chart first. The TwinSky AI agent then explains relevant chart evidence in response to a question, considering the Day Master, month command, chart structure and timing cycles. Xiang Shen is a supporting role in a chart structure; it is not interchangeable with every school's definition of a useful element.
A concrete question with a time range is easier to examine than a request for a verdict on one's whole life. For example: “Over the next year, which periods suggest preparation for a job change, and which call for caution?” Readings are for cultural exploration and reflection, not guarantees of future events.
What if the birth hour is unknown?
An uncertain hour makes the hour pillar and conclusions that depend on it uncertain. Record the actual precision and distinguish stable information from missing information. Entering an arbitrary noon time does not make a chart reliable.
